Online and Grassroots Campaigning… What Do You Think?

With the lull in campaign related news right now, I thought it might be a good time to brainstorm, borrow and discuss ideas for implementing an effective grassroots movement online.  Hopefully, this will be a work in progress as people comment.  If not, I guess it will just be a bulleted list of what I think various online campaigns are doing right.  Feel free and be encouraged to add your ideas or thoughts in the comments.

So, here it is (follow the links to see the ideas in action):

  • - Team Huckabee’s “Tell Us Why You Like Mike” YouTube series is a great idea.  YouTube, obviously, has endless possibilities.  Vincent is doing a great job and judging by the progress, working hard on the Explorehuckabee.com Blog.  If you have the means, Upload videos telling the world (in any way you choose – within reason) why you like Mike to YouTube, and tag them as Huckabee, or e-mail them to vincent.harris@explorehuckabee.com.
  • - Team Huckabee’s Barber Pole idea for fundraising, capitalizing on the Edwards joke, was brilliant.  Speaking of Fundraising and good ideas…when you Contribute to the Huckabee Campaign, make sure you head over to Ktracy.com and Sloane Reality to let them know.  They are both matching contributions 100% right now.  Also, Lisa from Massachusetts for Huckabee is offering up control of her blog for a day if you make a contribution and have it matched the 200% from Kevin and Sloane.
  • - Fred (or Friends of Fred – because I’m pretty sure he is resting), on imwithfred.com, asks his supporters to call Talk Radio.  They even provide you with a form to select your state and media market in order to get a list of talk radio stations (and their numbers) that serve your area.
  • - Again from imwithfred.com, the Fred campaign wants his supporters to get the word out by writing “Letters to the Editor.”  Understanding that most people are lazy and/or have A.D.D., the Fred Team supplies the Fredheads with a simple three-step form where you select the newspapers, provide your contact information, compose a brief letter and click submit.  I assume, at this point, it automatically sends the letter to each of the papers you selected.  Very Nice.  Well done.
  • - I have also noticed that on each candidate’s site, there are small links to their relative social networking pages…such as, twittermyspaceand facebook.  Twitter, btw, has great potential in a presidential campaign application.  I first came across twitter in a social application and it seemed a tad trite, in a stalker kind of way.  But, in a campaign, it provides the candidate with an effective method to keep his supporters feeling connected.  If you want to see it in action, check out John Edwards’ Twitter Site or Obama or Twitty DoddTwitty DoddChris Dodd.
  • - The “Hillary for President” campaign asks her Hillbots to become “HillRaisers.”  They create an account and get a raiser code.  Then, they set a personal fundraising goal and try to reach it.  Using hillaryclinton.com/contribute/[yourcode], they track their progress.  Team Hillary also implements the same method to encourage and track recruiting activity.
  • - A few of the candidates have sections of their websites devoted to States and/or Communities.  That seems like it should be a given.
  • - Bill Richardson has an excellent “Action Center.”  Check it out…plethora of ideas there.
  • - Chris Dodd uses a simple calendar in an effective way to keep track of events for the Dodd Squad.  Sounds simple…but, not every campaign does it.
  • - Then there is Ron Paul.  The man could start a grassroots campaign in the Himalayas and 45,000 people would trek there the next day.  Nevertheless, I like how he uses Meetup.  I also like that he has download items to print and links to Cafepress Items.
  • - Pardon me, but I need to yell this…A CAMPAIGN STORE!!!  Power it by Cafepress, if need be, but a campaign store is pretty important.  Maybe, even solicit campaign supporters to submit their designs for t-shirts, mugs, bumper stickers, etc.
  • - UPDATE:  John Edwards’ OneCorps “Online Community for Offline Action” is genius. (Thanks Hawt)
  • - UPDATE:  GOP Team Leaders also have a very good “Action Center.” (Thanks, Kevin)
  • - UPDATE:  Kathy from Michigan Redneck has created a message board.  Check it out here.
  • - UPDATE:  Elephantbiz.com recently gave Explorehuckabee.com a good grade, A-.  While it is an overall positive review, they do seem to agree with us (those of you in the comments) about the Social Networking and Action segments, or lack thereof.

“What’s missing from Huckabee’s campaign website is links to official Huckabee pages on MySpace, YouTube and Facebook. Also, Huckabee should make it easy for bloggers to add a “Help Huckabee” button or donations box to their web sites. It wouldn’t cost much and might help him bring in some desperately needed cash.  In terms of effective and broad use of social media, I’d give the overall effort a grade of A-.”

Some great ideas, we have felt the exact same way for quite a while. I also, would like to see him start a Team Leader like program where we could easily download brochures and flyers and hand them out a various events in our local areas and then record how many and where we handed them out. This would give Huckabee the ability to reach all fifty states since he obviously cannot campaign in them all. By the way, we love the store idea. Be sure to push for baby rompers and better bumper stickers.

  2. Lisa Says:

You have presented some great ideas that are being used by other candidates. Maybe we can adopt some of them.

I sense that all the Huckabee supporters just want to get this train rolling and for now we are going to have to power the train by ourselves. Just until the Huckabee campaign gets into full swing, which I hope is soon. Everyone agrees that online campaigning is of the utmost importance.

I know from a conversation with the field manager in New Hampshire, that t-shirts are on the way. They are almost complete with the design process.

It would be great if the Huckabee campaign took note of some of your suggestions, people really want to get involved with the grassroots movement.

  3. Hawt Sauce Says:

Great post. Don’t know if you got this idea from Kevin Tracy, but he’s been discussing the lack of a complete Huckabee online presence over at his blog as well. Hopefully all the talk and suggestions will bring about a change. With the internet’s ability to generate buzz in a low-cost manner and the fact that the Governor has very little funding as of yet, you’d think they would want to take full advantage. I just wish they’d gotten it together a little sooner. As it stands, they’re already several lengths behind a majority of the candidates on either side (online). So the more ideas we can generate (and Team Huckabee then implement), the better.

Here are a few ideas for the grassroots effort:

    • I think this part of the Edwards campaign is absolutely genius..
    http://blog.johnedwards.com/onecorps

    • Viral videos=marketing gold. These girls know & they’re offering their services.
    http://hotair.com/archives/2007/06/15/video-obama-girl-speaks/

    • Probably not very realistic, but how about a “referral marketing/matrix scheme”? Most people on the internet nowadays have been hit up (at least once) to join a free[ipod / computer / PS3 / camera / etc] scam. One thing can be said about these offers, they certainly can motivate people to keep the chain of referrals going. If this could be used (in a similar way) to campaign from, it might be very effective. The “HillRaisers” may be somewhat similar to this.

    • A members-only message board. This would help organize events, bloggers, volunteers, etc. It’d also be a good place to go talk with other supporters and keep up morale.

    • Text messaging. So many people use it today. There has to be a way to utilize it for this purpose.

    • Still on the cell-phone angle, how about downloadable Huckabee ringtones? There’s a ringtone of every other flavor, why not one of your preferred Presidential Candidate? It’d be an interesting conversation starter for sure.

    D. Roman,

I like the Team Leader idea. I think Hillary has something like that and I added the links to the Hillary bullet (hopefully, those two words don’t set off an alarm somewhere and I get a visit from ;-) the Secret Service).

  5. Jeremy Says:

    H.S.,

I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while (just as, I think, most of us have). I want to approach it in a positive way, though. I would like to solicit ideas and then find the means to implement them. Mike is slowly and steadily progressing in the polls and we are still very early in the game.

I like all of your ideas and agree that the Edwards OneCorps is very well done and genius. Viral Video (or Guerrilla Marketing in general), if implemented well, is hands down the most far reaching and cost effective. But, it is also hard to pull off in a political campaign…especially for a conservative.

Text Messaging…again, I completely agree! Did you check out Twitter? My wife tells me that I didn’t explain it very well…but, you just have to check it out. The links are above in the social networking bullet.

Message Board – One of the other bloggers started one a few weeks ago, but I forget who it was and I lost the link. Good Idea, though…and in the near future, it will be important to keep posts like this in a more private arena.

Ringtones – That sounds entirely feasible and fairly simple to do. But, what would you use for the ringtone? Chris matthews saying “neanderthal”? ;-)

  6. Warren Sloane Says:

Great Stuff. I spoke with Vincent Harris over the weekend and he said that they are putting up a forum/message board and I gave him some ideas on free software for doing that.
Hopefully it will be up soon.
I know they offer conference calls with the Gov. It might be nice to have a conference call with the web and blog guys.
I find it very encouraging that so many people want to join together and help make a difference.
I am meeting with Sarah Huckabee this week and I will address these items with her as well.
    Keep up the great work!

  7. Kevin Says:

The “Hillraisers” idea is actually being done by GOP Team Leaders. That is an AWESOME program and would make my contribution matching MUCH more popular.

Lisa said it best though. While Vincent Harris is doing a great job, he can’t do everything. Until they get into full swing, we are pretty much on our own. I might actually set up a private online forum for Huckabee bloggers this week where we can discuss this sort of thing in a more organized fashion and share content we create such as brochures, videos, and most importantly, ideas.

Thanks for keeping the heat on them!

  8. Jeremy Says:

Warren, thanks for the update on the forum…I had not heard that yet. I know Vincent only handles the blog and he has made incredible progress with it. He is and will be a bright spot in the online campaign.

  9. Jeremy Says:

Thanks, Kevin…I had not seen the GOP Team Leaders. That is a smart program.

  10. Steven M Nielson Says:

    Jeremy –

Great list. Make sure that you send this list to Vince, as well as everyone’s comments / additional suggestions. Vince is working Huckabee’s blog, and after a telecon I had with him yesterday, he is very open to suggestions. I see you have his e-mail address already listed under bullet #1, but I just wanted everyone to know that they are listening.

P.S. I can also be found on http://coloradoforhuckabee.blogspot.com

  11. Jeremy Says:

Thanks Steven, you’re right…I will shoot him an email to let him know. I’ve added you to my blogroll, also.

  12. Kathy Says:

About the idea of a message board. I started one a while ago, there has been hits but not to many people posted. I will start it back up again. I have added categories, but everyone can add categories.
    http://www.huckabeefans.freepowerboards.com
Please visit and give ideas. Remember, it is not my message board it is everyones!

  13. Jeremy Says:

Thanks Kathy, I knew someone started a forum…just couldn’t recall who or where.

  14. Hawt Sauce Says:

For a pretty exhaustive list of social networking sites check out Edwards’ page again.

    http://johnedwards.com/action/networking/

I said it over on K Tracy’s blog, and I’ll say it here again.. I (regretfully) think that the Edwards campaign is blowing away all the other candidates (on either side) with their grassroots/online efforts.

  15. kevintracy Says:

I’d say it’s between Edwards and Ron Paul. I don’t know how his supporters are organizing, but whatever it is they’re doing, lots of crack cocaine must be involved. If we could figure out their secret, Huckabee would be unstoppable.

But every time I mention Ron Paul, I have to add the disclaimer…

    “Ron Paul is an idiot.”

  16. Jeremy Says:

H.S., “Exhaustive” was a good word to describe that list of social networking sites. Amazing. I had no idea a few of those existed.

Edwards, Obama and Hillary all three have amazing online presence. But, I agree that Edwards has the best. He uses a company called PlusThree that is well connected to the DNC. They really know what they are doing — http://plusthree.com/newsdesk/ .

Kevin, I read an article the other day that was making the case for Ron Paul being the GHANDI of our times. I then did some searching and found out that his supporters have commonly refer to him as the Mahatma or Ghandi. I had somehow missed this…which is hard to imagine when you see the search results of “ron paul” + ghandi on Google — 81,800 results.

  17. Lisa Says:

Great idea Kevin, about setting up a private forum of some type so that “strategy sessions” like this one aren’t open to public viewing. If a potential Huckabee supporter came upon some of the comments in our blogs they might get the impression that this is a poorly run campaign and look elsewhere for a candidate.
So its probably best to get those forums going to discuss things there..

I believe Vince mentioned that he was going to start some type of forum.

Kathy, let everyone know when you start up your forum again, I would really like to post there too.

  18. Jeremy Says:

For the record, I think this is a very well run campaign. Gov. Huckabee knows how to win, even when given no chance by the so-called “experts.”

He is progressing in the polls with a fraction of the money of his rivals.

Hopefully, any new visitor and potential Huckabee voter will see this post and all the comments as they truly are…ideas and thoughts from an energized base of supporters chomping at the bit to do more in order to help get Mike elected.

I may not have done a very good job of framing this post, but I meant it in a positive way. I had no intention of it being taken as criticism. I felt and still feel that the continued progressive improvements and expansion of the online campaign is the goal…and more important than egos. I agree with you, Lisa, about the private forums. But, the fact is…there is no place to conduct these conversations right now. Warren says in a comment above that Vincent is working on a Forum…and that’s good because I think it should be centric to the official campaign.

  19. Lisa Says:

I am sorry :( Jeremy, I hope I didn’t offend you, I most certainly wasn’t referring to this blog in particular and I wasn’t implying that you thought that this was a poorly run campaign. I was just talking about blogs in general. You did a great job with this post, its a good idea! It is really helpful to discuss these issues. I just thought that a private forum for the bloggers would be helpful as support for Mike Huckabee grows so that other campaigns don’t know all our ideas….

  20. Jeremy Says:

No…you didn’t offend me. You just brought up some of the same reservations I had in starting this discussion in the first place. So, I just wanted to take the opportunity to clarify my view and add a disclaimer…of sorts.

Thanks for your comments and feel free to speak your mind anytime you wish. You won’t offend me! :-)

  21. Colonel Gene McVay Says:

I ran against Mike Huckabee for governor of Arkansas in 1998. He spent over a million dollars to defeat me in the Republican Primary where less than 60,000 votes were cast statewide.

As governor he increased state spending by over 65% and campaigned to raise taxes. He granted clemency 669 times which is more than the 507 clemencies given by the three previous governors combined. Many of the clemencies were granted to convicted murderers.

The CATO Institute gave him an “F” grade for spending and tax policy in 2006, and an overall grade of “D” for his governorship.

In 2002 he narrowly defeated State Treasurer Jimmie Lou Fisher, garnering 53% of the vote to her 47%. He was lucky that a more formidable candidate did not emerge in that election.

Bill Clinton placed a five year moratorium on Internet taxes; Mike Huckabee wrote Congress in support of a tax. He says he is for the Fairtax, yet he failed to eliminate tax on food in Arkansas after saying he supported doing away with the tax. It was the Democratic Governor Mike Beebe who reduced food tax after Huckabee’s ten years in office.

What does a former governor do with that kind of record? Why, run for president of The United States, that’s what.

  22. Kevin Says:

    Okaaay…

What’s up with “Col. McVay?” Don’t think you can reduce our support of Mike with that kind of rhetoric…

I support Mike to the ends of the earth!

Huckabee is making some ground. I found some great Huckabee buttons and bumper stickers for pretty cheap on Ebay. Check it out.
